Plant Nutrients & Boosters

Plant Nutrients and Boosters

All plants need a level of nutrients to survive, grow and flourish. Without nutrients plants would simply die.

Plants obtain the nutrients they require in the media in which they are attached to. This could be a crack in a rock, soil, sand, pebbles or rockwool or clay pebbles the list where plants thrive is extensive. There are plants that are able to grow on other plant such as orchids. These type of plants are know as epiphytes. Epiphytes use their roots to attach and anchor themselves on a plant and use their leaves for nutritional intake. An epiphyte is a plant that grows harmlessly upon another plant (such as a tree) and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, and sometimes from debris accumulating around it

Nutrients can be divided into macro elements and micro (trace) elements. Primary nutrients are absorbed by plants in relatively large quantities.

Macro elements include:

Nitrogen (N)
Phosphorous (P)
Potassium (K)

Secondary Elements include:

Calcium (Ca)
Magnesium (Mg)
Sulphur (S)

Although they are only needed in tiny amounts, this last group of nutrients is still vital for a plant’s metabolism and health. Micro or trace elements are needed in smaller quantities and they include:

Chlorine (Cl)
Iron (Fe)
Zinc (Zn)
Copper (Cu)
Molybdenum (Mo)
Boron (B)
Manganese (Mn)

Nutrients which are absorbed from the plants environment are:

Carbon (C)
Oxygen (O)
Hydrogen (H)

Adding boosters, such as Canna Boost to the plants grow media will boost the metabolic rate and make it healthier. However to enable this, the plant needs to be in a healthy condition in order to effectively absorb the booster as it essentially additional nutrients.

Be aware that any nutrients and/or boosters added to the grow media are the correct levels. Over loading the plants can result in problems which can be timly to reverse. Flushing the plants through with water would be the first action needed to rid the plants of the over load of nutrients. If in doubt about what to do or which nutrients and boosters are the best on the market please do not hesitate to visit us at Tropicanna Horticulture or call us on 013320348787 and one of our members of staff will be happy to help and advise.
